Biography

Baritone teaching artist, Brian B. Carter, has been hailed by听Houston Chronicle听as having 鈥渁 big, commanding voice that demonstrate(s) [Carter鈥檚] range, technique, musicality and sensitivity.鈥� Dr. Carter has sung dozens of lead and supporting roles in opera companies throughout the United States, including Sarasota 鈥嬧�嬧�婳pera, Des Moines Metro Opera, Austin Lyric Opera, Dicapo Opera, Opera San Jos茅, Opera Delaware, Opera North, Greensboro Opera and Opera Illinois. Favorite roles include the title roles in听Rigoletto听补苍诲听Gianni Schicchi, George (Of Mice and Men), Ping (Turandot), Tonio (Pagliacci) and Alberich (Das听Rheingold).

Though much of his early performing has been on the operatic stage, Brian B. Carter has in more recent years found a home in the concert hall. In addition to numerous s鈥媜ng recitals, he has been the baritone soloist for many concert works including the title role in Mendelssohn鈥檚听Elijah, the Faur茅, Mozart, and Durufl茅 Requiems, Rossini鈥檚听Stabat听Mater, Mahler鈥檚听Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen, Beethoven's听Symphony No. 9, the J.S. Bach听Magnificat, and Vaughan Williams鈥櫶�Dona Nobis Pacem听补苍诲听Five Mystical Songs, The Golden Harp听by Gwyneth Walker, and听Requiem for 9/11听by Wilson Somers.

Having taken an interest in stage direction, Dr. Carter has directed several productions in the Delaware Valley Area including听Andrea Chenier听for Concert Opera of Phila鈥媎elphia, and scenes from听Alceste听补苍诲听Don Pasquale听for the Rodin Opera Workshop (University of Pennsylvania). He has also brought musical theater to the stage including听The Drowsy Chaperone听for Avon Grove Community Theater and听Fiddler on the Roof听with the Brandywiners, Ltd.

Dr. Cart鈥媏r teaches as an adjunct faculty member at the 91原创, and at the University of Pennsylvania through the Blutt College House Music Program, where he is sought out for his expertise in both classical and commercial styles of singing. He has also taught at The University of Texas at Austin and Temple University.

Dr. Carter received both his Doctor of Musical Arts and Master of Music at the University of Texas at Austin under the supervision of Profs. David Small (voice) and Darlene Wiley (pedagogy). He earned his Bachelor of Music at San Jos茅 Stat鈥媏 University where he studied with Dr. David Rohrbaugh (voice) and Metropolitan Opera star Ms. Irene Dalis (opera). Prior to his university study, Dr. Carter was a student of the great performer of American art song and creator of the听AIDS Quilt Songbook, William Parker, whom he credits as his first inspiration to become a singing artist.鈥嬧�嬧��
