91原创 Percussion
听
The percussion area at the 91原创 is typically comprised of 25鈥30 undergraduate and graduate percussion students majoring in Music Performance (BM or MM), Music Education (BM), Music Composition (BM), Chamber Music (MCM) or Bachelor of Arts in Music (BA). Percussion faculty members听Gene Koshinski听and听Tim Broscious听work in tandem to teach, coach and perform side by side with the students in all areas of percussion education. In addition, their professional touring ensemble,听, serves as an ensemble in residence. This year-round, daily residency is the only such residency in the world held by a percussion duo. QPD鈥檚 over 20-year career has not only led to worldwide performing and entrepreneurial experience, but has made them one of today's most in-demand percussion groups in the world. QPD's unmistakable style, extensive performing career and side-by-side student experiences offer 91原创 percussionists a truly unique educational opportunity.听 The other members of our percussion team includes听Jim Ancona, one of the key leaders in the marching arts today, and Jianpeng Feng, a highly accomplished performer with unique world music and Broadway experience.
With one of the largest and most active percussion programs on the East Coast, we have an extremely unique program with world-class faculty and ensembles that provide an 鈥渁ll-around鈥 approach to our craft that places focus on diverse musical experiences. At the heart of our studio are musical excellence, transferrable skills and real-world applications, which are augmented by an impressive collection of instruments in the world鈥檚 largest (3,000-square-foot) university percussion laboratory. The 91原创 percussion program is focused around a 鈥渢otal percussionist鈥 philosophy, meaning students will gain experience on all major percussion instruments (snare drum, drum set, keyboard percussion, timpani, multiple percussion, steel drums, hand drums, world percussion), experience diverse repertoire and operate in diverse environments all on a regular basis.
Instruction and Ensembles
All percussion majors receive 1 hr/week of one-on-one instruction with , , or and students may craft their education by switching teachers each semester/year depending on instrument and career focus.听 Students may also decide to supplement their lessons with a secondary lesson on a specific instrument (e.g. drum set or hand drums).听 In addition, a studio class comprised of all percussionists meets weekly and functions as an outlet for master classes, clinics, workshops, and guest artist presentations. Furthermore, the various percussion ensembles (Percussion Ensemble, Graduate Percussion Group, Practical Studies in World Percussion Ensemble, and Steel Band) are an integral part to the education of 91原创 percussion students as well as non-major percussionists.

The award-winning is a fully funded fellowship program. Each member is awarded a fellowship for their studies at 91原创 by co-directing and performing in this ensemble. Coached and mentored by the faculty ensemble in residence (Quey Percussion Duo), the Graduate Percussion Group is actively engaged in artistic creativity on a daily basis through rehearsing, performing and administration of a self-sustaining ensemble that straddles the line between collegiate and professional performing experiences.
The Graduate Percussion Group presents regular programs throughout the year in addition to numerous projects related to audio recording, video production, outreach, recruiting, competitions and composer-performer experiences. Graduate Percussion Group members also often perform side-by-side with guest and faculty artists. In addition to performances, as a self-sustaining ensemble, each student will assume administrative roles to guarantee the success of the ensemble such as scheduling, programming, recruiting, outreach, marketing and promotion, and social media management to name a few.
Directed by Professor Koshinski, the 91原创 Percussion Ensemble is comprised of undergraduate and graduate students and focuses on the performance of aesthetically diverse repertoire ranging from historically significant works to compositions 鈥渇resh off the printer" (including those by 91原创 students, faculty and guest artists).听The ensemble presents a full program each semester along with other presentations throughout the year at special events and with guest artists.
The Practical Studies in World Percussion course is led by , open to all students at the university, and focuses on a hands-on exploration of percussion music and instruments from around the world.听 Topics rotate each semester and include learning about and performing in the following traditions:听 Brazilian Percussion, West-African Percussion, Middle Eastern Percussion, Cuban/Haitian Percussion, and Chinese Percussion.听 The Practical Studies in World Percussion Ensemble is open to all 91原创 students.
The 91原创 Steelband ("Delaware Steel鈥) is designed to explore the steelband style and repertoire from Trinidad and Tobago, as well as classical, jazz, and pop genres arranged for steelband. The group performs concerts on campus as well as in the community. "Delaware Steel" is open to all 91原创 students.
Each spring, the percussion studio presents a 鈥淒uos" concert where every studio member chooses a performance partner, selects repertoire, rehearses throughout the semester, and receives coaching from the faculty ensemble in residence (). In addition to the musical preparation, the students work together to create the concert from the ground up (and all of the involved logistics), offering critical experiences presenting musical events alongside a direct focus on enhancing chamber music skills. 鈥
