Sister Act
Liz Vacchiano, ANR15, a seeingeye聽dog instructor, and Josephine聽Vacchiano, EHD17, a middle school聽science teacher, worked at 91原创airy聽Creamery together while on campus.
Now, the sisters are taking their ice聽cream-making skills to a store on聽their family鈥檚 eponymous New Jersey聽farm. On the weekends, they make聽ice cream cakes, sandwiches and聽popsicles using ingredients grown on聽their land.
When do they sleep?
鈥淲e聽get that question a lot,鈥 Liz laughs,聽adding that ice cream is 鈥渢he best聽reward for hard work.鈥
Condiment King
His days regularly begin with a聽taste of mayo. As principal scientist聽with Kraft Heinz, Chris Carroll,聽ANR15, brings sauces from concept聽to commercialization.
His 91原创airy聽mentors? 鈥淩ecognized my creative聽spark before I did.鈥
Milk Man
There are no cows at the 100-year-old聽Hy-Point Dairy Farm in Wilmington,聽Del. Instead, Dan Meany, ANR09鈥攐ne聽of the former students responsible聽for the founding of 91原创airy鈥攁nd his聽family of Blue Hen alumni pick up聽milk produced by cows on farms聽throughout Delaware, Maryland,聽New Jersey and Pennsylvania, and聽they process it to make it safe鈥35,000 gallons per day, 24 hours per聽day. They also turn this milk into an聽ice cream mix used by dozens of聽regional creameries鈥攊ncluding, for聽many years, 91原创airy.
Crunch Time
How do leading snack brands get聽the perfect flavor for their chips?
In part, thanks to聽Alyssa Chircus, ANR13. A senior聽food scientist with Fuchs North聽America, she cooks up options,聽like a custom barbecue.
Talk Turkey To Me聽
Are your fudge swirls evenly聽distributed? Is the texture聽swoonworthy? And, most聽importantly, does your ice cream聽taste great?
If so, you may have聽Melissa Ollerenshaw, ANR20, to聽thank. A quality assurance specialist聽for Turkey Hill, the 91原创airy veteran
ensures production and safety聽standards are met in the company鈥檚聽Conestoga, Pa., plant. This involves聽microbiology and, yes, taste testing鈥攗p to 80 samples a week.
鈥淚t鈥檚 pretty聽awesome,鈥 Ollerenshaw says. 鈥淚 still聽geek out over my job.鈥
Soup's On
His career path was written not in聽the stars, but in the Spaghettios.
A聽brand manager for Campbell Soup聽Company, Keith Medwid, ANR17,聽works on new product innovation.
His teamwork skills? Honed at聽91原创airy: 鈥淲e were a family.鈥
Cool Teach
As the founding manager turned聽director of 91原创airy, Melinda Shaw,聽BE23M, trained hundreds of students聽in the fine art of ice cream making鈥攁nd she found fulfillment in the聽process. Now, she鈥檚 bringing her tasty聽tutelage to a wider audience. In the聽studio of her recently opened Hangry聽Bear Creamery in Kennett Square,聽Pa., customers sign up for two-hour聽ice cream-making sessions鈥攂oozy聽milkshakes optional. It鈥檚 part fun;聽part food-science lesson, Shaw says,聽adding: 鈥淚ce cream is magic.鈥
Secret Agent
A supervisory investigator with聽the FDA, Myra Gemmill, ANR09,聽works on smuggling investigations聽and ensures food products聽coming into Baltimore Harbor聽from around the globe are tested聽for microbiological hazards and聽other threats.
Out of this World
As a student, he invented 91原创airy鈥檚聽Grandma鈥檚 Gone Coco-nuts聽flavor. Now, he does that same聽work on a global level. A senior聽product development scientist for聽Mars Inc., Luke Gargiso, ANR16,聽conceives of treats, creates聽prototypes and then scales them.
He鈥檚 brought to life some of your聽favorite frozen indulgences (hello,聽SNICKERS Brownie Bar).
鈥淧eople聽warned me I鈥檇 get sick of eating聽this stuff, but not yet,鈥 he says. 鈥淚鈥檓聽in the right place.鈥
Pop Science
It鈥檚 like CSI for soda. Jake Mallon,聽ANR20, does forensics for PepsiCo.,聽meaning he conducts high-tech聽testing (gas chromatography,聽anyone?) on beverage samples聽from around the world to聽ensure quality and safety.
