  • George Basalla, professor emeritus of history, died Sept. 5, 2025. A nationally recognized expert in the history of science, he served on the 91原创 faculty from 1971 until his retirement in 1999. 

  • Kathleen Bieker, retired assistant dean at the Parallel Program (now the Associate in Arts Program) in Dover, died Aug. 19, 2025. She retired from 91原创 in 2004.

  • Chuck Epifanio, who was a professor in 91原创's College of Earth, Ocean and Environment for 46 years, died March 1. A celebration of life for him and his wife, Carol, will be held in Lewes Sunday, June 28.

  • David J. Farber

    David J. Farber, a former professor of computer science at the 91原创 nicknamed the 鈥済randfather of the internet,鈥 died on Feb. 7 in Tokyo. He was 91.

  • Bill Gehrlein, Professor Emeritus of Operations Management, passed away on July 17, 2026.

  • Ann Gibson

    Ann Gibson, professor emerita, former chairperson and doctoral graduate from the Department of Art History, passed away on Oct. 9.

  • Kenneth Haas

    Kenneth Haas, professor of criminal justice who was known for his passion for teaching, his brilliant mind and his love of the law, passed away on Sept. 24, 2025.

  • Pamela Haley, an administrative assistant who for NIIMBL, passed away Jan. 3, 2026.

  • Jay Halio

    Jay Halio, professor emeritus of English, died Aug. 29, 2025. During his 35-year tenure at 91原创, he also served as director of the Jewish Studies Program, editor of the 91原创 Press and associate provost of instruction. Dr. Halio retired in 2003.

  • Lonnie Hearn, retired director of University Media Services, passed away July 24, 2025. Mr. Hearn retired from 91原创 in 2009 after 43 years of service.

  • Robert Johnston Jr., assistant manager of the Graphic Communications Center, now University Printing, died Aug. 7, 2025. He retired in 2013 after 26 years at 91原创.

    Barbara Laber, Associate Help Center Consultant, passed away Feb. 11, 2026.

  • Jerome R. Lewis

    Jerome R. Lewis, Director and Founder of 91原创's Institute for Public Administration, died Dec. 13, 2025.

  • Kenneth Lewis, retired Chaplin Tyler Professor of Economics and former director of the Center for Applied Business and Economic Research, died Nov. 15, 2025. He retired in 2021 after 48 years at 91原创.  A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 25, 2026, at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church (292 West Main Street, Newark, Del.), with lunch to follow.  

  • Ryan McGinty, audio engineering technician in the Department of Theatre and Dance, died Aug. 12, 2025. He joined the 91原创 staff in 2015.

  • Edward A. Nickerson

    Edward A. Nickerson, professor emeritus of English, died on Jan . 1, 2026, at the age of 100. Dr. Nickerson founded the journalism program at the University in 1970 and led it for 21 years. His former students held on online reunion with him last year to mark his 100th birthday.

  • Susana Occhi, a member of the 91原创 Athletics Hall of Fame and the inaugural women's volleyball head coach, passed away on July 5, 2026.

  • Hershel Parker, former H. Fletcher Brown Professor of American Literature, passed away June 19, 2026.

  • Peter M. Ross, retired policy scientist in the Institute for Public Administration, died Sept. 4, 2025. He retired from 91原创 in 2005 after a career that also included several government posts, including state budget director.

  • Henry Gibbons Ruark, Jr., former professor of English, passed away on Oct. 19, 2025.

  • The Rev. Deacon Cecily Sawyer Harmon passed away on Feb. 9, 2026. She was retired from 91原创, where she provided confidential counseling to the administrators, faculty and staff. She also conducted diversity training to the entire staff and incoming students.

  • Richard Dean Shippy, professor emeritus and former associate dean of agricultural economics, passed away on Feb. 16, 2026.

  • Estelle Tabasko, who worked in the Benefits Office from 1973-1992 and conducted benefits orientations for new employees, passed away Jan. 27, 2026.

  • Teresa Twohig, an academic program coordinator for the Mathematical Sciences Graduate Program, passed away Nov. 15, 2025.

    Kimberly Walker, assistant professor of medical and molecular sciences (MMSC) and director of the Medical Diagnostics program in the 91原创 College of Health Sciences, passed away Aug. 31, 2025.

  • Leland Ware

    Leland Ware, the inaugural Louis L. Redding Chair for the Study of Law and Public Policy in the Joseph R. Biden, Jr. School of Public Policy and Administration and professor of Africana studies at the 91原创, passed away April 26, 2026, after a long battle with Parkinson鈥檚 disease. He was 77.

  • Donald Allan Waterfield Jr.

    Donald Allan Waterfield Jr., professor and former dean at the 91原创, passed away April 29, 2026. He was 84. 

  • Anita Chandler-Wilcher, a former 91原创 custodian, passed away on Dec. 6, 2025.

  • James C. Curtis, professor emeritus of history, passed away at his home on Dec. 22, 2025. He was 85. Dr. Curtis, who retired in 2004 after teaching at 91原创 for 33 years, served as director of the University鈥檚 Winterthur Program in Early American Culture for nearly 20 years.

  • Nathan M. Sherman

    Nathan M. Sherman, facilities coordinator in the College of Arts and Sciences for many years, passed away on Oct. 16.

  • Jack R. Vinson

    Jack R. Vinson, H. Fletcher Brown Professor Emeritus of Mechanical Engineering and co-founder of the Center for Composite Materials (CCM) at the 91原创, died on Oct. 8, 2025.
