Biography

​Angela J. HatteryÌýis the author of 12 books. Her most recent, Way Down in the Hole: Race, Intimacy and the Reproduction of Racial Ideologies in Solitary Confinement explores the ways in which racial antagonisms are exacerbated by the particular structures of solitary confinement. She is also the author of Policing Black Bodies: How Black Lives are Surveilled and How to Work for Change (2022) and Gender, Power and Violence: Responding to Sexual and Intimate Partner Violence in Society Today. She has authored more than 60 book chapters and peer reviewed journal articles. She has won numerous awards, including the Excellence in Teaching Award, 91Ô­´´ (2024) and Sociologists for Women in Society 2019 Feminist Lecturer Award.

Recent Publications

Current Projects

​Along with Dr. Earl Smith, Dr. Hattery is currently completing work on a three-year project examining the living and working conditions in solitary confinement units in a state prison system. The project involved nearly 100 interviews with inmates and staff living and working in solitary confinement as well as ethnographic observations.Ìý The book, tentatively entitledÌýWay Down in the Hole: Race, Intimacy and the ReproductionÌýof Racial Ideologies in Solitary ConfinementÌýis under contract with Rutgers University Press.
