Bio:听Kayla鈥檚 lab provides diagnostic testing and technical assistance to poultry integrators, growers, veterinarians, and members of allied industries around the world. She spends her time isolating viruses and gene sequencing to study the Newcastle Disease Virus.

鈥淓very week there has been something new to learn鈥here is so much that go into making vaccines that don't just stop once it is given but even after it is used鈥eing a rising sophomore there were a lot of things that I didn't understand right away and some of the basics still needed to be explained, but Dr. Ladman and his team were very patient with me and still gave me the hands on experience I needed.鈥

Through Envision, Kayla realized she wants to pursue a career involving research.

Bio:听Paige shadowed Dr. Kniel鈥檚 food safety lab during the spring semester and was able to continue her work into the summer through Envision. She worked on a pathogenic bacteria, protozoa, parasite, and virus surveillance project, collecting samples of production lines, soil, and pre-harvest water from small and midsized farms across Delaware.

鈥淭he point is to collect information about where possible exposure may occur and take preventative action if needed. This also helps with outreach to the farms to help them develop improved safety protocols.鈥

Paige aims to become a food animal veterinarian, taking preventative actions to keep animals healthy for eventual safe human consumption.

Bio:听Trinity has been working in Dr. Crossley's agricultural entomology lab for the past two years, including last summer when she was also a part of Envision! She joined Envision to help fund her senior thesis: identifying the physical features of microscopic, clear roundworms called nematodes. She would like to continue her research in graduate school.

Bio:听Sydney, a member of 91原创鈥檚 NCAA D1 Women鈥檚 Ice Hockey, joined Envision to pursue her senior thesis research, a blend of species population and habitat management. She studied the impact of different source translocations on Northern Bobwhite habitat use and movement in Pennsylvania. She also used compositional analysis to analyze vegetation surveys of quail and nest locations daily.

鈥淚 love the work I'm doing. It has given me valuable hands-on experience in tracking using telemetry, vegetation sampling, and habitat quantification while enforcing what I鈥檝e been learning in the classroom about habitat and species management along with species identification.鈥

Sydney aims for graduate school for endangered or threatened species management.

Bio:听鈥淒iscovering what doesn't work is just as important as discovering what does work. There is no such thing as failure!鈥

Through Envision, Brooke studied the effectiveness of the probiotic Enterococcus Faecium MLS15 alone and alongside other treatments against E. Coli and Salmonella. Brooke experimented on live models such as C. Elegans and Gallaria, using skills such as pipetting, dilution, plating, media preparation, qPCR, western blot, and subculturing.

鈥淚 have always been fascinated, and stressed, about antimicrobial resistance and how we are going to overcome this, so the fact that I can be a part of the research being done to overcome this global crisis makes me very excited. I have really enjoyed working with live specimens, bacteria, and surprisingly pathogens too. It is all just fascinating to me.鈥

Through Envision, Brooke sees herself specializing in veterinary pathology after finishing her undergraduate degree and attending veterinarian school.

Bio:听With two previous lab experiences, Dylan joined Dr. Gressley鈥檚 animal nutrition lab. Dylan spent the summer on a cow study, examining the bioavailability of different formulations of rumen-protected lysine products. Dylan took blood and feed samples, then centrifuged them from four dairy cows, which had each received four different rumen-protected lysine treatments over four experimental periods.

鈥淚 had an amazing experience working in Dr. Gressley鈥檚 lab. In addition to working hands-on with cows for my study, I had the opportunity to work closely with my extremely passionate and dedicated mentor, and her team of PhD and undergraduate students.鈥

Dylan hopes to continue research as an undergraduate as he aspires to become a zoological or wildlife veterinarian.

Bio:听Violet could not get enough of her immunology course, and thus was recommended by Dr. Yitbarek recommended to join Envision where she used mRNA, cDNA, and gDNA analysis to study the effects of iron on the potential proliferation of clostridium perfringens in chicken embryos.

Despite this being her first time working in a lab, she said, 鈥淚've loved it! Honestly, I've felt more in my element in the lab than I have at any previous job or work experience!...There is honestly so much I've been picking up, and it's absolutely something I would be interested in making a career out of one day.鈥

When asked to reflect on her overall experience in Envision, Violet said, 鈥淓nvision is one of the most inspiring and enlightening programs the University has to offer; at least in my eyes. It's helped me cultivate skills and find pathways I never knew about before鈥 only wish I'd enrolled in the program sooner!鈥

Bio:听Todd spent the summer in an agricultural entomology lab studying the use of black soldier fly larvae in waste upcycling.

鈥淚 am interested in my lab work because it not only promotes less food waste, but also takes a different approach to combating food insecurity. I find the idea of using different organisms as solutions to man-made problems such as food waste fascinating鈥y experience has been great. Not only am I learning everything I hoped to learn, but I am fostering professional connections and helping the community around me.鈥

Todd plans to pursue his DVM and Ph.D.

Bio:听After participating in Summer Fellows with Dr. Jeffrey Mugridge, Adia wanted to step outside the classroom and explore cutting-edge research areas she had only read about. Through her experience studying plant microbiology this summer, Envision has allowed her to see how her biochemistry interest intersects with agricultural science. 鈥淚 am taking away a lot of simple, but necessary, lab techniques and principles鈥 It has been such a hands-on, immersive experience. I am able to work independently, while also being guided. 鈥

Bio:听Isabelle came into the lab curious about genetics and the development of the agricultural industry. She has spent the summer reviewing emerging scientific literature to aid in her lab鈥檚 research: finding master regulators behind egg production rates in broiler breeder hens.

Isabelle leaves Envision with a greater passion to 鈥渓earn more about the world and have a positive impact on protecting the environment, animals and people that inhabit it.鈥

Bio: Simran joined her food and agribusiness marketing lab with a passion for risk management and protecting coastal communities. Bio:听Isabella wants to be a veterinarian and hopes her lab experience in Envision will help her stand out during the application process. While her lab is known for Marek's Disease research, this summer she studied the Heartland Virus, using methods such as mini-preps and gene sequencing.

A lesson she learned this summer was that it takes a lot of smaller experiments to get one successful major result. When asked how her Envision summer has been, she said 鈥淭he experience has been amazing, I believe this work is laying the foundation for major future discoveries.鈥

Bio:听Joseph joined Envision this summer with the hope of designing and executing his own research project. With two years of undergraduate research experience under his belt, this summer, he observed an array of phenotyping, then took images of samples to study the infection dynamics behind the infectious pathogen Pythium and maize plants in a plant and soil lab. He appreciates how his lab work tackles many aspects of plant improvement, such as how to produce genetically superior plant varieties and ways to combat the pests.

鈥淚t takes many people to create a single, important variety that will eventually end up changing the world. Plant science is a challenging discipline that requires a good amount of patience, but watching the plants grow and your hypothesis get proven, or disproven, is an endlessly enjoyable experience.鈥

Envision has encouraged him to attend graduate school, then join the plant science industry.

Bio:听Meyer came into their synthetic biology lab with prior experience in plant and soil science lab work, including Envision last year! This summer, Meyer studied pollen germination under heat stress by first identifying an artificial germination medium for in-vitro study of regular/unstressed growth, then altering germination conditions to study the effects of temperature and hormonal signals related to heat stress. They gained skills in basic DNA extraction, PCR, and agarose gel electrophoresis.

鈥淚 like how I can directly envision how what I am doing/trying to do fits into a larger scientific body of knowledge.鈥

Bio:听With past experience collecting and monitoring water samples from local streams as part of Stream Stewards, this summer Kristin joined an urban forest ecology lab to study another aspect of ecological health: soil. She gathered soil from multiple city forests, then analyzed the samples in the lab for their chemical makeup. She also aided in the continuation of small, urban forests as part of FoRests Among Managed Ecosystems, FRAME.

Kristin said overall, 鈥渕y experience has been very insightful, engaging, and enjoyable.鈥

Bio:听During the past spring semester, Brandon began assisting Dr. Hui Ru Tan in Dr. Juzhong Tan鈥檚 food science lab. This summer, he continued to research optimizing the conditions of the extruder for 鈥減uffed snacks鈥 made from lima bean flour. This process included grinding and sieving raw lima beans into flour, then putting the flour and distilled water through the extruder to produce a puffed snack.

Brandon has learned a lot about equipment safety and has experienced the design and execution of an experiment. He hopes to make something that can save somebody else from having to do tedious lab tasks.

He is very thankful to both Dr. Hui Ru Tan and Dr. Juzhong Tan for their patience.

Bio:听As part of the Coastal Resilience Design Studio (CRDS), Kayla spent the summer analyzing twelve neighborhoods along Route 9 near Wilmington through GIS mapping, community engagement, and site visits.

鈥91原创 Envision has provided me with an incredible opportunity to create a meaningful impact on Delaware communities while gaining practical experience in sustainable design and resilience planning鈥 feel confident navigating the design process and communicating with community members and stakeholders. This experience has enabled me to be an active contributor in all aspects of the landscape architecture workflow and has strengthened my passion for the field.鈥

Bio:听Cate came to Envision having worked with Dr. Jaisi on a separate project, experience with NMR spectroscopy, and a deep interest in soil pollution. She had a wonderful experience using UV Vis and an Orbitrap mass spectrometer to study phosphate pollution in soil.

Bio:听Zoe saw her work this summer as having the potential to prosper in crop science and major agricultural operations. She measured the effects of Abscisic Acid, a common plant stress hormone, on Arabidopsis and tomato plants. She applied exogenous applications to the plants and collected leaf angle and thermal measurements with special cameras. One of the main goals of this research is to directly impact yield potential by influencing canopy structure, planting density, and light-use efficiency.

鈥淚 like the sense of individuality that I have in this space, it is much different than a typical lab you have to take for a class.鈥澨

Zoe says she is leaving with experience actively participating in research and applicable lab skills. 鈥淚t is inspiring to share our own research, and all work towards innovative solutions together鈥his experience confirmed that I am exactly where I want to be, and that agricultural research is important to me.
