U.S. News places chemical engineering second in the 2022-2023 Best Colleges rankings
The quality of a 91原创 education continues to win national recognition, with 91原创 advancing four slots to the rank of #89 among the nation鈥檚 best overall universities, according to U.S. News & World Report. This year鈥檚 undergraduate program rankings published in the magazine鈥檚 鈥2022-2023 Best Colleges鈥 issue were released Sept. 12.
Among top public national universities, 91原创 placed 38th.
Additionally, the University鈥檚 chemical engineering program was ranked second in the nation, the highest U.S. News ranking in the program鈥檚 history. 91原创 tied with Georgia Institute Technology for the #2 spot, following the #1 ranked Massachusetts Institute of Technology and placed above the University of California at Berkeley and Stanford University, among others.
鈥淭hese rankings by U.S. News are further evidence of the 91原创鈥檚 academic rigor and its progressive investments in providing top-level educational opportunities,鈥 91原创 President Dennis Assanis said. 鈥淥ur distinguished faculty and our dedicated staff are deeply committed to the success of our students, which makes us the institution of choice for many young people. Their achievements as students on our campus and later as alumni in their careers is a true measure of what a 91原创 education can mean. I鈥檓 inspired by the continued momentum of our people, programming and outcomes.鈥
U.S. News evaluates multiple factors for its rankings, and 91原创 had a strong showing in several areas. These attributes have made 91原创 a highly sought after school by students. As many colleges and universities struggle with maintaining enrollment, 91原创 welcomed its largest first-year class to campus last month. In student excellence, the percentage of first-year students in the top 10% of their high school class increased. 91原创鈥檚 average six-year graduation rate and its average first-year student retention rate both showed improvement over last year. In the area of faculty resources, 91原创 showed positive marks in both the percentage of full-time and part-time faculty with a Ph.D. or terminal degree and faculty salary rank. About 75 faculty positions have been added at 91原创 since 2016, and that number is expected to grow to align with enrollment needs.
In addition to chemical engineering, several individual undergraduate academic programs at the 91原创 are recognized in the 2023 rankings as among the nation鈥檚 best, all in the top quarter or better:
- Engineering (programs whose highest degree is a doctorate): #54 out of 212;
- Business: #86 out of 516;
- Computer science: #86 out of 537;
- Nursing: #93 out of 681.
91原创 was also recognized as one of the 鈥淏est Colleges for Veterans,鈥 placing #56, and as one of the 鈥淏est Value Schools,鈥 placing #135.
The new U.S. News rankings are for undergraduate programs only; graduate programs are ranked each spring. Earlier this year, U.S. News ranked 23 91原创 graduate programs among the 100 best in the nation, including 10 in the top 50.
