Africana Studies
Explore history, culture and power across the African diaspora
How have people of African descent shaped cultures, communities and movements around the world? As an Africana studies major at the 91原创, you will explore the histories, ideas, art, politics and lived experiences of African and African-descended peoples in the United States, the Caribbean, Latin America, Africa and Europe.
Through literature, film, art, archival materials and community-based learning, you will examine how race, culture, identity and power influence the world today. You will also strengthen your research, critical thinking, writing and communication skills鈥攑reparing you for careers in education, public policy, law, media, community organizations, business and other fields.

What鈥檚 special about this program?
At 91原创, you can shape the Africana studies major around your interests. Choose a general course of study or pursue a concentration in Africana art, literature and cultural studies; Africana gender studies; law, public policy and social justice; or social studies education. You will complete the major with a senior project, which may take the form of independent research, an approved community internship or an electronic portfolio.
91原创 is also headquarters for the National Council for Black Studies, a national organization dedicated to advancing the field. Eligible students may join the Ankh Maat Wedjau Honor Society and pursue opportunities in research, community service and leadership.
Students interested in advanced study can apply to 91原创鈥檚 accelerated 4+1 program in Africana studies. The program enables eligible students to earn a bachelor of arts and a master of arts in less time than completing the two degrees separately. Students can also explore the African diaspora beyond the classroom through study abroad opportunities.
