Preparing to Teach Online

91原创 has several programs to support instructors in designing and developing online courses.

Elevate Online Learning is a stackable professional development program for 91原创 faculty, instructors, staff, and graduate students who teach with Canvas. Developed by the new 91原创 Center for Innovative Lifelong Learning and Teaching, which is comprised of 91原创 Online, Professional and Continuing Studies, Academic Technology Services and the Center for Teaching and Assessment of Learning, Elevate combines sound online teaching practices with hands-on use of 91原创 digital tools to help instructors create clear, engaging, and well-organized courses that support student success. Information and registration are below for each Track.

Track A: Elevate with 91原创 Digital Skills

Track A is a voluntary, self-paced course designed to help participants become familiar with 91原创-supported digital tools and gain foundational knowledge in building effective Canvas course sites.听 This course offers a flexible, practical learning experience that allows instructors to explore tools, apply strategies in real contexts, and build confidence in course site design and setup.

In this track, you'll learn how to:

  • Customize course set up and navigation items

  • Create, organize and share content with students

  • Use assignments and the Gradebook

  • Use Canvas integrated media tools such as 91原创 Capture and Zoom to enhance teaching and learning

As part of the course, participants will be given a staging course, where you can build a version of your Canvas site.听 Any work completed in the Track A staging site can be copied into an actual course shell for use with students. Participants are encouraged to use subject matter content that they plan to teach as the basis for their work in Track A.听

Participants have a three-month window to complete the course and earn a digital badge upon successful completion. It takes about 5 hours total to complete all the required tasks tied to the badge. However, participants can continue working on building out their actual course modules with Instructional Design support during the full three-month course window.

Whether you teach fully online, hybrid, or in person, Track A will strengthen your confidence in using digital tools to teach and help you design courses that support student success.

Track B: Elevate with Online Teaching Skills

Track B is a facilitated, cohort-based experience where you will be enrolled as a student. This unique perspective allows you to experience online learning as your students do鈥攏avigating modules, engaging with peers, meeting course milestones, and receiving feedback from a facilitator.

The course includes three modules and is designed to be completed over a three-week period, with participants moving through the course together as a cohort. While there is some flexibility within each week, participants are expected to complete one module per week so that peer engagement, discussion, and feedback can happen within a shared timeframe.

This course serves as an introduction to intentional course design. You will explore pedagogical frameworks such as Backward Design and Universal Design for Learning (91原创L) and begin applying them to your own course materials. By the end of this course, you will have a clear course map and a blueprint for creating a more inclusive and well-aligned learning environment.

As a student, you鈥檒l have a dedicated facilitator guiding you through milestones, providing personalized feedback, and modeling best practices for online instruction. The facilitator will also help support timely peer interaction so that participants have opportunities to exchange ideas, respond to one another, and learn from the cohort experience.
