The following steps are to help master's and doctoral students prepare the final written project for their degree.

Step 1:

Start Preparing the Format Early

Please review the 91原创 Thesis and Dissertation Manual and keep it on hand. Acquire and use the for formatting requirements for your document.

As of fall 2026, the signature page is no longer required to be included in your submitted thesis or dissertation.

Step 2:

Submit the Application for Advanced Degree

Graduate degrees are awarded at the end of each semester. You must file your Application for Advanced Degree with your program coordinator by the dates published on the Academic Calendar.

Step 3:

Defense of Thesis/Dissertation

Defense of the dissertation, thesis or project should be scheduled with enough time to make all content edits to meet the semester submission deadline. All deadlines are published on the academic calendar. Share defense dates for inclusion on the University calendar.

• For doctoral students: As soon as you have defended, send the signed Certification of Doctoral Defense Form to your program coordinator to upload into Stellic.

• For master's students: The procedure for master's degrees varies in each program. Check with your advisor on the procedure in your program. There is not a defense form that needs to be submitted for a master's degree.

Step 4:

Submission of work to the Graduate College

Please follow all deadlines published on the academic calendar.听

Prior to submitting your final paper and in conjunction with your advisor:

• Use iThenticate to review your document for copyright or plagiarism infringement.听
• To request access to an account, please use . Once you receive notification that access has been given, you will receive an email from iThenticate to finish setting up your account.
• You should complete the .听
• After running the report, please share it with your advisor and review the overall similarity percentages. This tool helps ensure that you cite work appropriately and avoid unintentional plagiarism. You do not need to submit your report any further than your committee chair.
• Please note that the Graduate College will also run a report on your final submission.

*NEW: As of fall 2026, the is due on the same day as the ETD submission.

Once you have successfully defended, made all edits recommended by your committee and finalized your work, complete the next steps by the submission deadline listed in the academic calendar.

• Submit the Final Thesis/Dissertation Approval Form in TeamDynamix.

  • Log in to the .

    • Select 鈥淪tudents.鈥�

    • Select the 鈥淕raduate Student Services鈥� category.

    • Click on the 鈥淔inal Thesis/Dissertation Approval鈥� form.

  • Fill in all information, ensuring you have the correct name and contact information for each section. Please confirm with your department if you are not sure.听

• When you have the final approved version of your thesis/dissertation by your committee, to the ETD site.

Following your submission

• When you submit to the ETD site, the dissertation or thesis goes to the Graduate College, which will review the PDF and let you know if there are formatting corrections to make.

• Once you've made all formatting revisions, the Graduate College will route your electronic Final Thesis/Dissertation Approval Form for signatures.听

Step 5:

Final Approval

Once the Graduate College dean approves your thesis or dissertation, the Graduate College will notify you and your appropriate academic unit members, as well as satisfy the Stellic milestone for final approval. You will receive notification that the degree requirement has been satisfied via the completion of your milestone in your Stellic record.

The electronic approval process will include:

• Thesis/dissertation committee

• Department chair

• College dean

• Graduate College dean

Step 6:

For Ph.D. students only

Complete the . (Complete "I need to register." Once completed, an email will be sent to you with a PIN and password to access the survey.) This NSF survey is a requirement.
