Biography
Kyong-Min Son, PhD聽(Cornell University, 2012) joined the Department in 2012. He specializes in democratic theory and twentieth-century political thought. In his work, Kyong-Min examines how the idea and practice of democracy is historically shaped by surrounding political, socioeconomic, and technological conditions, and engages in contemporary debates in light of his findings. Kyong-Min takes an interdisciplinary approach and integrates social theory, political economy, and the philosophy and history of social science into his work. In his recent book,聽The Eclipse of the Demos: The Cold War and the Crisis of Democracy before Neoliberalism聽(University Press of Kansas, 2020), Kyong-Min traces the current crisis of democracy to a multifaceted transformation of democratic theory during the Cold War. He is currently writing a book on the rise of finance capital in the twentieth century and its implications for democratic citizenship.
