Summer Research Experiences
Opportunities for First-Year Graduate Students
First-year graduate students are encouraged to begin mathematical research early through two summer opportunities. Both programs feature a weekly pizza seminar and culminate in presentations at the Summer Research Symposium:
- Unidel Summer Fellowship: A six-week research experience pairing a student directly with a faculty adviser.
- Groups Exploring the Mathematical Sciences (GEMS) program: A competitive 10-week project pairs a rising second-year graduate student with an undergraduate student and a faculty adviser. Participants receive a $6,000 stipend and gain hands-on mentoring experience.
Winter Research Symposium
Scholarship and Award Opportunities
​The Winter Research Symposium typicallyÌýtakes place on Friday of the first week of the spring semester. A graduate program alumnus delivers a keynote address, and the recipient of theÌýWenbo Li Scholarship​ for Gr​​aduate ResearchÌýis announced. Senior graduate students who have completed their candidacy examinations present their research during a poster session, with two recipients selected forÌýposter awards.ÌýWinners receive a travel allowance, and their work is displayed in the lobby of Ewing Hall for one year.
