Applicants to the History Education/History 4+1 (B.A./M.A.) program must be at least in their junior year at the 91原创 and have completed 72 credits toward the History Education major. Applicants should have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 and a minimum GPA of 3.5 in history courses. A minimum grade of B+ is required in all dual-counted graduate courses.

Admission is selective and competitive and is based on the number of qualified applicants and the availability of faculty and program resources. Meeting the minimum academic requirements does not guarantee admission, nor does failing to meet one or more requirements automatically preclude admission if the applicant demonstrates other significant strengths.

Applications are due by January 5 each year. Applications are reviewed on an expedited timeline by members of the Graduate Studies Committee and the History Education/Secondary Social Studies Education program, with admission decisions ideally made by January 25 to allow accepted students time to adjust their spring schedules, if necessary.

Thirty credits are required for the M.A. in History, including 21 credits in history. Eighteen of these 30 credits are completed during the 鈥淧lus 1鈥� year as a graduate student. These courses include four 600-level graduate reading seminars, HIST 600 (鈥淎pproaches to History鈥�) and HIST 800 (鈥淗istory Writing Seminar鈥�).

The remaining 12 credits are completed as dual-counted graduate courses during the student鈥檚 undergraduate career and apply toward both the B.A. and M.A. degrees. These credits are:

1. EDUC 613, EDUC 614 and EDUC 619 in place of EDUC 413, EDUC 414 and EDUC 419. Alternate dual-counted course options may be approved with permission from the program director.
2. HIST 400, taken during the fall of the senior year, as HIST 601 (鈥淭opics in History Seminar鈥�). Please note: HIST 601 does not satisfy the undergraduate second writing requirement. Students are encouraged to complete the second writing requirement during the fall of the junior year.

Applicants must submit:

• Letter of application describing their academic interests, professional goals, and why they are a good fit for the program.

• Unofficial transcript showing coursework completed, GPA, and institutions attended.

• Writing sample demonstrating preparedness for rigorous graduate-level work. The sample should show the applicant's ability to develop and address a compelling historical or contemporary question, conduct original research, construct an original argument, and write in clear, engaging prose.

• Two letters of recommendation addressing the applicant's potential for success in the 4+1 M.A. in History Education program.

History students learn about the past to understand their present and shape the future. The History minor complements a range of majors, from English and World Languages to Anthropology and Political Science. History courses help students develop core skills, including critical thinking, persuasive argumentation, and clear communication. Students in advanced History classes learn to organize and execute original research projects. These experiences prepare them for a range of careers in museums, law, business, government, and the nonprofit sector.

The Irish Studies minor combines required history and English courses with approved electives from across the University. The minors in Jewish Studies and Jewish Studies with Language complement many different undergraduate majors, and allow students to create a concentration based on their own interests and goals. The program provides students with linguistic and cultural knowledge that enable pursuit of many career paths, including education, social work, public service, museum work, international relations, and non-profit management.

The Museum Studies and Public Engagement minor gives undergraduates a behind-the-scenes look at museums and related cultural institutions while building practical skills in areas such as education, collections care, digital technology and administration. The 18-credit minor includes core coursework, an internship and approved electives across the College of Arts and Sciences, with hands-on learning and opportunities to apply some courses toward multiple academic requirements.
