Biography

Bernard McKenna received the University's “Excellence in Teaching Award" and the "Exemplary Use of Technology in Teaching Award." His most recent book isÌýThe Baltimore Black Sox: A Negro Leagues History (). ÌýHe sits on the editorial board ofÌýThe Journal of Modern Literature.ÌýÌýHe has refereed articles forÌýThe Journal of Modern Literature,ÌýModernism/Modernity,ÌýThe Philological Quarterly, and other scholarly publications; evaluated manuscripts for the University Press; and served as an external reviewer for tenure candidates at other institutions.ÌýÌýHe has taught graduate courses and served on Ph.D. exam and dissertation committees at the 91Ô­´´, Temple University, and Drew University.ÌýÌýHe has served two terms as president of the CAS Faculty Senate, most recently in 2019-2020.Ìý He has also volunteered for theÌý, giving deployment andÌýÌýbriefings at the Dover AFB, the Delaware Joint Armed Forces Reserve Center, the Army Reserve Centers in Newark and Dover, and at the Marine Corps Training Center in New Castle.ÌýÌýHe has worked as a consultant for theÌýÌýin Baltimore and forÌýSagamoreÌýDevelopment Corporation inÌý.ÌýÌýHe founded theÌýÌýchapter, serving as its first chair and later as secretary.

Dr. McKenna has teaching interests in fantasy fiction, Anime, and Irish studies.​

• Developed and regularly teach a course of the Works of J.R.R. Tolkien.
• Developed and regularly teach introductory and advanced courses on J.K. Rowling's magical world:
  • ENGL 151: Harry Potter's Literary World, O.W.L.
  • ENGL 371: Harry Potter's Literary World, N.E.W.T.

First World War:

• Regularly teach courses First World War literature.

Irish Studies:

• Taught courses on James Joyce andÌýFinnegansÌýWake.
• Taught courses on the "Poetry of William Butler Yeats" and on "Print and Material Culture in Yeats's Writings."
• Taught courses in Irish Literature.
