Assistantship Spotlight: Jackson Hamilton

The 91原创鈥檚 Department of Political Science and International Relations creates opportunities for students to grow, contribute and prepare for their futures. For political science major Jackson Hamilton, that opportunity included helping Erin Cassese, professor of political science and international relations, develop a new undergraduate course.
Cassese invited Hamilton, who is entering his junior year, to collaborate on the course after seeing his enthusiasm and engagement in her Political Psychology class.
鈥淒uring one class, we discussed in-group and out-group behaviors in politics,鈥 Hamilton said. 鈥淎 student presenter used sports to help explain the concept, dividing the class into Eagles fans and Cowboys fans. As a strong supporter of Philadelphia sports, I was determined to be labeled an Eagles fan鈥攁nd fortunately, I was.
鈥淚 expressed my passionate support for the Eagles and my absolute disdain for the Cowboys. Professor Cassese recognized that enthusiasm and said it led her to believe I would be a good fit for her new course.鈥
Hamilton will help Cassese develop The Politics of Sport, a 100-level online political science course.
鈥淢y vision is to explore the politics embedded in sports,鈥 Hamilton said. 鈥淭hat analysis could take many forms, including political messaging in sports, athletes鈥 influence on the public and the political implications of athletic competition, such as displays of nationalism during international sporting events.鈥
Hamilton was eager to accept the opportunity because the course connects two of his strongest interests.
鈥淚 wanted to help develop the course because it allows me to contribute to the political science department in a way that is bigger than myself,鈥 he said. 鈥淚t also brings together two of my biggest interests: sports and politics. I have previously researched these topics and combined them in work for other courses.鈥
The experience will also help Hamilton strengthen skills he expects to use in his career.
鈥淚 currently plan to attend law school and pursue a career in corporate law,鈥 he said. 鈥淩esearch will be a major part of that work, so developing this course will help me practice and refine my research skills.鈥
Through the collaboration, Hamilton is gaining hands-on experience in research and course development while helping create a new learning opportunity for future students. The Politics of Sport is expected to appear in a future schedule of political science courses.
