Affiliated faculty celebrate scholarly publications, prestigious appointments and the retirement of James Brophy

Under the leadership of Daniel Kinderman, the European Studies Program at the 91原创 continues to thrive as a dynamic hub for interdisciplinary inquiry. Part of the Center for Global and Area Studies (CGAS), the program encourages critical engagement with Europe鈥檚 cultures, histories, politics and contemporary challenges.

Global Journalism Insights: Financial Times Editor Visits 91原创

91原创 welcomed Financial Times editor and journalist Victor Mallet on April 20 for his guest lecture, "The Rise of the French Far Right and the Implications for Europe and the World." Drawing from his recent book, Far Right France, Mallet delivered a timely analysis of contemporary French politics to an engaged audience of students and faculty. The European Studies Program was honored to host Mallet during a busy American lecture tour that included stops at Columbia University and Harvard University.

Celebrating Faculty Scholarship and Leadership

The program also celebrated significant research milestones and professional honors among its affiliated faculty:

Ana Oancea, associate professor of French, celebrated the publication of her new book, Dangerous Creations: The Inventor Novel in Fin-de-Si猫cle France (University of Toronto Press). In a standing-room-only event, Professor Oancea discussed her book with Andrea Goulet, professor of French at the University of Pennsylvania. Their engaging conversation and the thoughtful discussion that followed showcased the collaborative and intellectually dynamic spirit that defines the European Studies community.

Deborah Steinberger, professor of French and comparative literature, was named co-president of the prestigious Society for Interdisciplinary French Seventeenth-Century Studies, a testament to her national leadership and scholarly contributions to the field.

Honoring an Extraordinary Legacy: James Brophy Retires

This year marked the retirement of James Brophy, Francis H. Squire Professor of History, whose distinguished career has made a lasting impact on the study of modern European history and generations of 91原创 students. A renowned scholar of 19th-century Germany and an exceptional mentor, Brophy leaves behind an extraordinary legacy of scholarship, teaching and service.

The program extends its gratitude to Brophy for his many contributions to European historical studies. Ensuring his academic tradition continues seamlessly, Brendan Haidinger鈥攐ne of Brophy鈥檚 former doctoral students鈥攊s teaching courses in his area of expertise.
