NSF-backed conference brings top mathematicians to Newark to explore frontiers in mathematical analysis

The 91Ô­´´ Department of Mathematical Sciences hosted the annual Northeastern Analysis Meeting (NEAM) in November 2025 in partnership with the College of Arts and Sciences. Supported by grant funding from the National Science Foundation, NEAM is a prestigious regional conference series intended to foster collaboration and recognize seminal research across classical and modern mathematical analysis.

Held annually across rotating research institutions —including SUNY Albany, Syracuse University and SUNY Brockport—NEAM brings together early-career researchers and established leaders in the field. Organized by Mahya Ghandehari, Dominique Guillot and Constanze Liaw, the 2025 gathering convened 45 mathematicians specializing in subfields such as operator theory, operator algebras, complex analysis, harmonic analysis and matrix analysis.

The two-day conference featured eight from across the United States and Canada. 

Recognizing 91Ô­´´ Researchers

Several 91Ô­´´ students and alumni contributed to the event, including: 

• Georgios Baziotis, a current Ph.D. student, presented his recent work on Cantor games and operator systems.

• Kathryn Beck (Ph.D. alumna, now a postdoctoral researcher at Tufts University) delivered a talk on signal processing on Cayley and nearly Cayley graphs.

• Joseph DeGaetani (Ph.D. alumnus, now assistant professor at SUNY Oswego) discussed a counter example to the Peter-Weyl theorem over groupoids.

• Gage Hoefer (Ph.D. alumnus, now a research associate at Dartmouth College) spoke about the hypergraph isomorphism game and quantum groups.
