Help young people find their voices
Do you love reading and writing and want to help young people discover the power of language? As an English education major at the 91Ô´´, you will prepare to teach English language arts in grades 7–12. You will build a strong foundation in literature, writing and language while learning how adolescents develop as readers, writers and thinkers.
Coursework in literature, literacy and technology, linguistics, grammar, adolescent development, special education and diversity will help you design rigorous, relevant learning experiences for a range of students. You will learn to choose engaging texts, teach reading and writing and help students examine multiple perspectives and issues of equity.
After completing your coursework, student teaching and required assessments, you will be prepared to pursue teacher licensure and begin making a difference in secondary classrooms.

What’s special about this program?
At 91Ô´´, you learn by teaching early and often. Field experiences begin in your first year through partnerships with local schools, and English education majors complete at least five school-based experiences before full-time student teaching.
Placements in diverse secondary schools give students varied responsibilities and opportunities for working with and teaching adolescents, resulting in their senior year capstone experience of student teaching full time in the spring semester. Students form a strong bond with the peers in their cohort, and our graduates have had great success finding teaching positions in and beyond the mid-Atlantic region.
