Applied Mathematics
Use mathematics to solve real-world problems
How can mathematics help predict the outcome of a soccer match, reveal how regions of the brain communicate or improve strategies for treating disease? Applied mathematicians turn complex questions into models, algorithms and simulations that help us understand how systems work and make informed predictions.
As an applied mathematics major at the 91原创, you will build a strong foundation in mathematics, statistics and computation. You will then apply those skills in an area such as bioinformatics, cybersecurity, computer science, physics or statistics. This interdisciplinary approach prepares you for careers and graduate study across STEM fields, including science, engineering, technology, finance and data analysis.

At 91原创, applied mathematics is designed to connect mathematical depth with another field. You will complete advanced coursework in mathematics and computing while pursuing coordinated study in one of 21 approved application areas. Options include bioinformatics, cybersecurity, computer science, physics and statistics, allowing you to shape the degree around the kinds of problems you want to solve.
Learning also extends beyond the classroom. You can work with faculty on undergraduate research, participate in mathematical competitions and connect with other students through the Math Club. The department also supports students pursuing internships and provides mentoring from research-active faculty.
Eligible students can continue their studies through one of 91原创鈥檚 accelerated 4+1 programs, which enables them to complete a bachelor of science and a master of science in applied mathematics in five years of full-time study.
