GRE Test Scores

The most important thing to know about the GRE at the 91原创 is that it is an admission requirement set by the graduate programs themselves. If you would like to know whether your particular program of interest requires a GRE and/or what scores they consider acceptable for consideration, please check the听program鈥檚 website.

GRE test scores are valid for five years.

For Applicants: Review the听or request for official test scores online at听. GRE and GMAT test scores are valid for five years from the test date until the date your application is received. Waiver of these tests can only be made by a request from the faculty admission committee to the central graduate admissions office at the time of acceptance.

For Graduate Programs:听The听听contains a new section called Integrated Reasoning (IR). Only the IR component has a 鈥渘ew鈥澨�, so no new concordance table will be needed for the other components.

GMAT test scores are valid for five years.

UPDATE听鈥� The 91原创 Graduate College will accept the virtual 鈥楾OEFL at Home鈥� exam plus the adaptive TOEFL Essentials test from ETS. Use the for the test.

All foreign national applicants for graduate study at the 91原创 are expected to have or gain English proficiency prior to enrolling in graduate coursework. Listed below are the ways to demonstrate English proficiency via your application.

TOEFL

• The TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is the standard University requirement to show proof of English language proficiency. The 91原创 sets the following minimum scores:
  • TOEFL IBT:
    • Minimum score 79 (100 for some programs)
    • Minimum Speaking score of 18
    • As of January 21, 2026, TOEFL iBT introduced a new score scale: Scale 1-6 (with increments of 0.5)
      • TOEFL iBT new score scale minimums:
        • Minimum total score of 4
        • Minimum Speaking score of 4
      • Please keep in mind that certain programs may require higher overall scores and Speaking scores.听
  • TOEFL paper-based:
    • Minimum score of 550 (600 for some programs) PBT
    • Minimum score of 61 (82 for some programs) PDT听
    • Separate evaluation for Speaking Proficiency required

• Applicants must score 100 or higher on the TOEFL or the equivalent on the IELTS to be considered as a Teaching Assistant.
  
  
• Many programs require a TOEFL ibt score of 100. To find out if your graduate program of interest has this as it鈥檚 TOEFL minimum please check the department鈥檚 webpage.
  
  
• To find out if your graduate program of interest has a higher minimum score, please contact that department directly.
  
  
• A waiver of proof of English Proficiency is allowed when:
  • A 产补肠丑别濒辞谤鈥檚, 尘补蝉迟别谤鈥�s, or doctoral degree has been or will be earned from a university recognized the ministry of education in a country where English is the primary language. Our list of approved countries includes听Anguilla, Antigua, Australia, The Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, Cameroon, Canada (except the province of Quebec), Cayman Islands, Dominica, Grenada, Ghana, Guyana, Ireland, Jamaica, Kenya, Liberia, Montserrat, New Zealand, Nigeria, Puerto Rico, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, Singapore, South Africa, Trinidad & Tobago, Turks and Caicos, The United Kingdom, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
  • A 产补肠丑别濒辞谤鈥檚, 尘补蝉迟别谤鈥檚, or doctoral degree has been or will be earned from a college or university located in the United States and accredited by a regional accrediting association.

IELTS

Some graduate programs will accept IELTS (Academic version) in place of the TOEFL. Please check with your department of interest.

• The minimum TOEFL ibt is 79 and this is equal to an IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score of 6.5 overall with no individual Speaking sub-score below 6.0.
• If your graduate department of interest requires a TOEFL ibt of 100, then this is equal to an IELTS score of 7.0 overall.

Conditional Admission based on achieving English Proficiency (ELI-CAP)

Some graduate programs will consider an applicant who is otherwise admissible except for English proficiency. Please check听if your program of interest will consider you. (Please note: Some programs expect to see required GRE or GMAT scores prior to consideration, while others will wait to see if you achieve acceptable scores).

Note: English proficiency scores are valid for two years. Official scores are only marked as received when received directly from the testing service. The ETS 91原创 code is 5811.
