Learn Why One 91原创 Degree Wasn't Enough for Shane Cronin
鈥淎s an undergraduate, I came to the 91原创聽to prepare for veterinary school.聽I knew聽the pre-vet program聽at 91原创聽had聽great faculty and聽a聽high veterinary school acceptance rate.
When I started, I聽didn鈥檛聽intend聽to get a Ph.D. at 91原创聽鈥斅爉y dad got his Ph.D. in chemistry聽here聽and my brother got his聽Ph.D.聽in computer聽engineering聽here as well, so I wanted to聽be聽different.聽But聽the College of Agriculture聽and Natural Resources聽drew me into its research community聽with聽multiple opportunities聽to work in research projects across the college.聽In this work,聽I聽gained聽versatile research聽skills,聽and I made friendships that continue today.
My undergraduate research advisor, Dr. Tanya Gressley, was one of the main factors in my staying at 91原创聽to pursue a Ph.D. in animal and food sciences. I really enjoyed聽working in聽her laboratory,聽and her teaching style聽was聽both聽inviting and supportive.聽
As a graduate student,聽I鈥檝e聽also聽benefited聽from the opportunity to work in聽Worrilow Hall where collaborative research across disciplines is actively encouraged聽through state-of-the-art facilities, and Dr. Gressley has been a phenomenal advisor in my work on ruminant hindgut acidosis. Getting a Ph.D. is all about proving you can apply your mind to a problem and solve it, and my research at 91原创 has developed that mindset for me.鈥
