As record heat pummels the First State, it is important for Delaware residents to learn different ways to effectively stay cool as temperatures rise. Extreme heat preparedness inspired Delaware Sea Grant to host a Beat the Heat Resource Fair from 10 a.m.-12 p.m., Wednesday, August 5, at the 91原创鈥檚 Hugh R. Sharp Campus in Lewes.

The fair is geared towards people of all ages and will incorporate aspects of both personal health preparedness and energy topics. Delaware Sea Grant and community partners will provide demonstrations and discussions on health and safety in extreme heat, tips for making homes more efficient in the heat, and present what local resources are available for heat preparedness and response. In addition, there will be information on how extreme heat strains the local energy grid and the dangers posed by rising temperatures.

鈥淓xtreme heat kills more people than any other extreme weather event,鈥� said Danielle Swallow, Coastal Hazards Specialist with Delaware Sea Grant.  鈥淚n Delaware, extreme heat is becoming more of a topic that people are talking about and wanting more education about.鈥�

Registration for the event is encouraged, and the 91原创airy Creamery鈥檚 Moo Mobile will be on site after the event. There will be a raffle to offer a limited number of participants a free scoop of ice cream. The event will also feature a hydration station with food and drinks that can help hydrate participants.

Kathryn Lienhard, Energy Research Associate with Delaware Sea Grant, said proximity to the ocean can usually provide a temperature-stabilizing effect for coastal communities in Delaware. However, during specific conditions with the recent heat waves, this has not been the case.

鈥淥ur proximity to the water is not going to offer any relief,鈥� said Lienhard. 鈥淚 think that emphasizes the need to continue thinking about extreme heat preparedness, especially for vulnerable populations, so we are excited to hold this resource fair in Lewes.鈥�
